Call for Expressions of Interest

Deadline: May 21, 2026 (23:59 UTC+1) 

This call aims to support Ph.D. students enrolled in doctoral programs at Portuguese Higher Education Institutions who wish to undertake between 6 and 12 months of research at The University of Texas at Austin under the mentorship of UT Austin faculty or researchers.

During their stay, selected candidates will carry out translational research aligned with one of the Program’s core scientific areas while strengthening their doctoral work and fostering long-term collaboration between Portugal and UT Austin.

Before starting your application, please ensure that you:

  • Carefully read the Call Announcement, the eligibility requirements, and the evaluation criteria.
  • Have identified a UT Austin host (advisor) and obtained their agreement to support your application.
  • Have obtained support from your Ph.D. supervisor in Portugal.

Applicants will be asked to provide:

  • Personal and academic information
  • Details about their Ph.D. program and research background
  • Information about the proposed UT Austin host (advisor) and Portuguese Ph.D. supervisor
  • A summary of the proposed research work plan
  • Uploads of all mandatory documents 

Confidentiality and evaluation

All submitted information will be treated confidentially and used exclusively for the evaluation of applications in accordance with the procedures described in the Call Announcement. Aggregated data may be used for monitoring, communication, and reporting purposes in fulfillment of the Program’s obligations.

Only candidates who will be entering the second year of their Ph.D. program or beyond at the start of the internship at UT are eligible to apply. For your reference, internships at UT must start between September 1 and December 31, 2026, and be completed by December 31, 2027.

Internship Plan and Dates

Internships must last 6-12 months and take place between September 1, 2026, and December 31, 2027. All internships must have started between September 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026.

Research Work Plan Summary

Together with the PhD supervisor in Portugal, the Ph.D. candidate should meet with the potential host (advisor) at UT Austin to discuss both parties’ expectations regarding the work plan and its outcomes. Work plans should not exceed four pages and should:

Identify key stakeholders 
Identify the host (advisor) at UT Austin and the Ph.D. supervisor in Portugal. 

Define the research framework 
Include: title; keywords; abstract; and a state-of-the-art review. 

Set objectives and relevance 
Clearly state the objectives. 
Demonstrate the relevance of the object of study. 

Detail the work plan 
Provide a detailed description of the plan, including tasks to be carried out and how they fit within the scope of the doctoral work. 

Ensure alignment and fit 
Fit the candidate’s research needs and goals within their doctoral work. 
Align with one of the scientific areas of the UT Austin Portugal Program (see Section 1: Purpose of the Call). 

Support with references 
Include bibliographic references.
